MY FIRST ORIGINAL FLUTE
Many years ago, in an umbrella stand at a house in Bologna I found a Grenser, which is almost like saying
a Stradivarius for a flutist.
The Grensers were one of the major families in Dresden
for the making of woodwind instruments, the leading representatives of which were Carl Augustin (1720 -1807) and his nephew Heinrich (1769 -1813) working from the 1740s up to the early 19th century. This particular flute, probably made in the late 18th century, has a particular of two crossed swords with the name August Grenser engraved just below. Since then, I have used a copy of this instrument for the performance of all classical repertoire. Here it can be heard in the Trio of the Quartet for flute and strings n.2 op.145 by Ferdinand Ries.
